We have a very special guest joining us
in the studio tonight, Susan Walters from the
hit TV series "Melrose Place". Let's all
welcome Susan to the show! Hi Susan!"
SusanWalters says "Hi!"
HLHost says "How are you?"
SusanWalters says "I'm great!"
guest24 asks "what is it like working on Melrose
Place?"
SusanWalters says "It was really enjoyable
... everyone is really nice, accomodating and
generous. It's not at all what you would think
it'd be. You'd expect catfights and jealousy ...
none of it."
RLLance asks "How long will your character
be on Melrose Place?"
SusanWalters says "8 episodes."
HLHost says "That's it?"
SusanWalters says "Uuuh ... yeah. I've already
been in 3 very minor flashbacks. Tonite's
my character's big night. Double episode.
My husband plays Dr. Cooper, Linden Ashby."
HLHost says "What's that like?"
SusanWalters says "It was a lot of fun. We
were only in one scene together and it was like
a date. Cause we have 3 kids, so it was nice
to spend time together and have fun. My first
job was a soap opera called Loving. We played
cousins and that's how we met."
HLHost says "And, fell in love on Loving! Who'd
a thunk?"
SusanWalters says "Yeah, we'll be married 12
years in April."
guest24 asks "how did you get into acting?"
SusanWalters says "I went to NY from Atlanta
to model with Elite."
HLHost says "BIG agency."
SusanWalters says "Yeah, in 1982. I started
doing commercials and they let you try out for
soaps. As it is with models. I did well and
was encouraged to take classes. 8 months later, I
got on Loving."
HLHost says "Really? that quick?"
SusanWalters says "Yeah, I was very very lucky.
I was lucky that they were casting where
they wanted the family to resemble each other.
I resembled the guy playing my father and
the guy playing my brother."
PeterBill asks "What is your favorite role
you've played?"
SusanWalters says "It would be Priscilla Presley
in "Elvis and Me." A miniseries. It was
told from her point of view, from her book.
They play it on VH1 all the time. It's my favorite
job. I got to ... what's the right word? A
lot of time with women's roles, you end up totally
supporting the male role. In this case, it
was her story, so I got to portray her from A-Z. I
met her."
HLHost says "What was she like?"
SusanWalters says "She was very different from
the girl in the book ... the woman she'd
become. I asked her about her upbringing.
Didn't need to ask her too much. She was very
supportive of my work."
HLHost says "you were in The Big Easy?"
SusanWalters says "Yes I was! I always forget
that. It was 8 months of my life living in a
different town. I completely forget that I
was on it!"
mej2 asks "Susan, I watched you on The Big
Easy. Why did you decide to leave that
show?"
SusanWalters says "Long story, but to put it
quickly, my husband Linden was doing "Spy
Games" on TV. We worked together on that.
My kids missed their dad and because I
worked everyday, 16 hours, I didn't see my
kids. So, I didn't think it was the way I wanted
to be a wife and a mom. It was hard on me
as a family person."
HLHost says "It's really strenuous. The job
alone is strenuous."
SusanWalters says "Yeah, for me my family is
my priority."
RLLance asks "What happened to your character
on The Big Easy? Why was her
departure never mentioned?"
SusanWalters says "I'm sure her departure wasn't
mentioned because they weren't too
happy that I left. The whole thing was for
the guy to go on and get the babe of the week,
cause my character wasn't there. I was gone.
I don't know what happened to the
character. It was wise of me to want to leave
the show cause I didn't know what they had
in store for my characteer. They wanted more
of a cop show with babes, they weren't
supportive of the law aspect."
Mingo Jones asks "Was the TV show The Big Easy
based on the film???"
SusanWalters says "Yes. I was reprising the
character Ellen Barkin did in the film."
HLHost says "I just love her! She's great."
SusanWalters says "Yes, she is."
ExciteUser asks "(grroverx):What do you like
most about TV acting?"
SusanWalters says "The answer is SO different
than what I would have said 7 years ago
before children. In reality I feel like I'm
a mom and a wife and this person, Susan. Then I get
to go off to work and be an imposter. The
joy in it is that I know that I have such a great
and honest reality to go back to. I love the
"sport" of it. 'If that makes any sense. On the
business side, God willing I keep getting
jobs here and there. I don't want to be away from
my kids as much as I was being a lead on a
series. I'm able to work here and there and
make some money and the rest of the time,
I'm a stay at home mom. It's the best of this
world for me. 7 years ago, I would have said,
I love to get into the character and such."
Row8 asks "What's been your most challenging
role to play?"
SusanWalters says "But, now I have an added
challenge of trying to make it work for my
entire life. Wow. Challenging role .... Would
be my first season of "Dear John" a sitcom on
NBC. The first time I ever did a comedy, I'd
just finished dramatic stuff. And, everyone
there was from Broadway or Shakespeare or
Second City. I'd never performed in front of a
live audience. That was the most challenging.
Trying to survive. The first episode, I
remember thinking I'd won an emmy because
I didn't DIE on the set!"
SusanWalters laughs hysterically.
HLHost laughs.
SusanWalters says "It's like the "survival
award"!!!"
HLHost says "Yeah! Maybe we can petition for
a new emmy!"
SusanWalters says "That was my most challenging,
but my most challenging as a person
was The Big Easy because of the backstage
drama."
guest33 asks "For an up-and-coming actress,
what would you suggest?"
SusanWalters says "Take classes. Go to college.
I'm at an age now where I wish I had a
college education to fall back on. I'm fortunate
that I've always worked and supported
myself. And, my husband works all the time.
But, it hit me that I didn't have a college
degree, not that it matters anymore, but it
couldn't hurt. And, also the relationships you get
at college are invaluable and I never went.
Don't ever compromise your morality to think
you're going to get ahead that way. I've seen
it and women do get ahead but then they're
never around 5 years later. I'm still auditioning
with the same women I auditioned with 5
years ago. We're the workhorses, we show up
and do our work. And that's the way to
longevity. You know what I mean."
HLHost says "Right. And, you've been around.
You've seen people come and go."
SusanWalters says "Yeah, and as a model, I
saw it. I was exercising, eating the right foods,
and these girls were wild! But, I've never
heard of any of them since. It's easy to get
seduced by the other side"
guest24 asks "How difficult is it to have a
husband that is an actor?"
HLHost says "It's romantic and looks good but
you fall hard on the other side."
SusanWalters says "In terms of watching him
make out with beautiful women?"
HLHost says "Yeah, I think that's what they're
getting at."
SusanWalters says "It's uncomfortable at times.
But, when I watch his work, I believe it.
So, it's hard to believe his acting and then
think he's faking being hot for this woman he's
making out with. That part is difficult. If
I saw him being charming and sexy and romantic
to women on screen and then coming home and
not having the time of day for me, it'd be
difficult. But, I'm getting much better than
they're getting!"
ExciteUser asks "(coolman69) :What does your
husband think when you kiss other guys
on your show?"
SusanWalters says "He's a little bent that
I'd be kissing Rob Estes as well he should be.
He says he doesn't really watch, so who knows."
ExciteUser asks "(candy_99) :If you did have
the chance to go back and go to college, what
major would you choose?"
SusanWalters says "I don't even know at this
point! When I was in high school I wanted to
be an anesthesiologist. Then, I thought of
being a nurse. When I was a senior. You don't
have the malpractice liability. But, now I
wouldn't want to do that, because I wouldn't have
met Linden. It'd just be nice to have a back
up ... a basic, "I've been to college." I could
teach at my kids schools, or add on to a basic
degree."
HLHost says "It's never too late to do anything.
There's always something else you can
learn."
SusanWalters says "The positive thing is that
everytime I have a job, I'm reminded of how
much I love what I do. And auditioning is
really tough. For as much as I work, and as
successful as I've been, there's a lot of
rejections! But, then I work and realize I love it.
Right now it's pilot season, so there's 4
or 5 a week. Normally it's like 1 or 2 auditions a
week."
HLHost says "For people that don't know anything
about that, it's a lot!"
SusanWalters says "Yeah! I used to do 2 or
3 a day, but I tell my agent I can't do that.
Today I had an audition with 17 pages of dialogue!!
And, you're supposed to do it in 20
minutes and convince them that you're the
one when there's 15 other babes in the waiting
room and you've seen their work!"
guest24 asks "what were your inspirations growing
up?"
SusanWalters says "You mean in other people?"
HLHost says "In other things, people ... what
made you tick?"
SusanWalters says "I definitely loved school.
I'm hoping my daughters will share that. I
love doing research for parts. On The Big
Easy, I got to read every book to prepare for
being a lawyer. I loved that. I was also very
athletic as a kid. I kind of approach my work
from an athletic point of view. There's something
about it, it feels very athletic."
HLHost says "Like if you accomplish it ..."
SusanWalters says "There's something about
being able to visualize what I"m doing
physically before I do a scene, really relaxes
me. You visualize it before you do it and
you're much more in the moment. On The Big
Easy they realized that I could run faster
than the actor. So, I got to do a lot of running
around! I loved that. People don't usually
think of me like that."
HLHost says "I was running this morning! And,
woooo! It's a hard thing to do. I'm so NOT
athletic. In the past couple of weeks I started
running and it kills me. I'm totally into it and I
love it but it's tough!"
kolumbyne asks "where would you like to see
yourself go from Melrose?"
SusanWalters says "I'm hoping that people will
see me acting with actors and actresses
my age and remember that I play early 30's
and I would really like to get in an ensemble
show. A lot of times I try out .... people
have a hard time casting me as "the friend of" ... so
and so's friend or wife. I generally do better
when it's the LEAD woman. And invariably
those go to actresses that have a deal with
the network. But, hopefully this show will show
that I fit in with ensemble nicely. I play
a character who isn't like the girl next door. This
business is about perception. They look at
you and think they know you. The girl I'm
playing now is kind of pathetic and dull!
That was fun for me! Lisa Rinna's character calls
me stupid, and moronic, and a bimbo! So, it's
fun! Different!"
SusanWalters laughs hysterically.
SusanWalters says "She's romantic and it's
something dramatic. After you do a sitcom
they think that's all you can do."
mej2 asks "What was is like to work with the
cast of Seinfeld?"
HLHost says "Now you're showing them your wide
range of character."
SusanWalters says "It was great! I really didn't
get to know anyone really well because the
first time I did the show, Jerry was really
sick. My daughter Savannah was only 2 months
old. I really had to focus in my little room
between scenes so I didn't do any hanging out.
But, they were all so much fun! They changed
things at the last minute and it turned out
great! The second time, they flew me in from
New Orleans and I taped my stuff and flew
home. All I saw was Jerry and he was just
great! I'm really happy for people that are that
successful and not jerks!"
PeterBill asks "Do you get recognized as "Mulva"
from "Seinfeld" it was such a memorable
episode?"
SusanWalters says "It's my favorite recognizability
factor! I don't know how else to say it! I
love it when people recognize me as Mulva!"
HLHost says "Yeah, it's the most recognizable
episode!"
SusanWalters says "Usually it's guys! I've
been at auditions where I've walked in and the
producers stood up and clapped for Mulva!
Then you think you've got the job. But, it's
funny how many people in the business loved
it and wanted to talk to me about it. It's too
bad the show's gonna end. I loved playing
Mulva!"
HLHost says "Maybe they'll get you on for one
more. BRING BACK MULVA! We'll start a
campaign!"
guest33 asks "If you could be on any other
show right now which would it be?"
SusanWalters laughs hysterically.
SusanWalters says "Wow ... ummm.... God, I
can't even .... I couldn't choose. No. Because
a lot of the shows that I think are the best
shows I don't get to watch a lot. I have kids and
am wasted by 10pm every night."
HLHost says "How old are your girls?"
SusanWalters says "6 and 5. ER is fantastic!
They really direct so well. The actors. It's
such a gift to have that kind of direction
and also NYPD Blue. I've auditioned for them.
They give you 20 pages to learn by the next
morning. It's amazing cause the writing is SO
great! That's the difference between ... so
much of it is about the writing."
HLHost says "What's funny is that when the
writing is really good it's recognized but
when it's not, it's the actors fault. KNow
what I mean?"
SusanWalters says "Yeah, when I auditioned
for ER and it wasn't the right part for me.
That's why it was better with The Big Easy,
that part was SO right for me. That's what it's
about, finding the right part. There's so
much to click for a show to be really good.
Production values, the look of the show, the
actors, the writing. Everything has to come
together."
PamelaB asks "Do you think a show should "go
out" when it's on top, like Seinfeld is
doing?"
SusanWalters says "I think it's pretty noble.
If the other people on the show weren't going
to be so taken care of financially, it'd be
a bummer. I guest spotted on a show where the
lead actor was making a lot of money and he
basically tanked the show. He had huge
fights with the creative people and they pulled
the plug on the show! I thought that was
awful cause the actors and the crew had nothing.
This other guy went on ... And with
Seinfeld, they're all so taken care of. I'm
still cracking up at the show! I became a fan."
HLHost says "Totally!"
SusanWalters says "We watch it every Thursday
night!"
HLHost says "Yeah, we watch the whole Thursday
night line up, me and my man."
SusanWalters says "Yeah, that's the thing about
Melrose Place, they say we have no
ratings but everyone tapes it! My kids have
to be into bed at 8 cause they don't need to
watch that show!"
HLHost says "Really?"
SusanWalters says "Yeah, they don't know that
you're allowed to have a sense of humor
while watching it? What are all these people
doing in bed together? We'll keep them
innocent for a while."
PamelaB asks "How much TV do you let your children
watch? and what types of
programs?"
SusanWalters says "The kids at school come
up to me and say they saw me and I say tell
your mommy you shouldn't be watching!"
HLHost says "Good for you! That's funny."
SusanWalters says "They come home from school
and do homework and on the
weekends they watch cartoons, Smurf Babies,
Little Mermaid, they have every single tape
available. We have a computer so they play
mathbusters and jump start first grade. Which
is better. They really like it."
HLHost says "That's fun!"
mej2 asks "Weren't you on Dear John for a while?
I really enjoyed Harry Groener. Were
you surprised that he was such a great singer
and dancer."
SusanWalters says "Yeah. Uh huh. Yes I was!
The character he played, Ralph, was so
ultimately nerdy. Then he left the show and
was the lead in My One and Only I think? On
Broadway. I was surprised and impressed by
his talent. He was really funny. They ALL
were."
HLHost says "It must be great to work with
people who are really talented."
SusanWalters says "Yeah, it's all in their
delivery. Jane Carr who was the therapy director
said it so that she'd get three laughs in
the middle and a huge laugh in the end! She was
amazing. I was asking her to tell me how to
say it! I was really good the third season."
ExciteUser asks "(Knight_Man): Have you ever
done any sci fi films??"
HLHost says "That's what they're there for.
Learn from them!"
SusanWalters says "No. But everything I audition
for lately is sci fi. I really need to get into
it more. When I read it it's hard to understand
sometimes, like an action script. Pretty cool
some of the stuff they're writing about."
TamyS asks "Do you prefer doing comedies like
Seinfeld, action/adventure like The Big
Easy, or something more like Melrose?"
HLHost says "Some of the movies coming out
are really cool."
SusanWalters says "Ooh ... The neat thing abou
The Big Easy is that it was a romantic
comedy with the cops and robbers thing. You
had the relationship thing and the let's get
the bad guy thing. It was funny, the best
of all of them. I can't compare other comedies to
Seinfeld cause they're not as funny. I would
think of myself as more of a "dramedy" thing. I
like when there's relationships, I can bring
more truth to them. It's hard to figure out the
comedic "beats." It's fun, some scripts come
easily and I don't do the quirky thing real
well."
HLHost says "You're more the sexy bombshell
..."
SusanWalters says "Nah! I'm more of the kind
of person ... you look at me and think you
perceive me and got it ... and what I like
to do as an actress where you dig beneath the
surface you think that life is more complicated
for this woman."
PamelaB asks "Do you have any aspirations to
direct or produce, like most actors do? And
why do you think so many actors want to take
that route away from acting?"
SusanWalters says "No! I have NO aspiration
to direct, I don't know HOW they keep it all
together! But, I can watch a scene ... I just
did this MOW where we're all on a liferaft called
"Two Came Back" and there were scenes where
my character was passed out cold. So, I
had to lay there all day and listen. I was
listening and thinking, "I think he oughta do this ...
etc.. So, as far as thinking about moving
the camera and such, I don't think I'd be good at
that. I think in terms of production value
and the business of it. I show up on time and I
know my dialogue ... time is money. Producers
think that way. I can appreciate that you're
not supposed to be pregnant if you have to
be in a bikini on Melrose Place!"
BillyMilikin asks "I loved "Hotel" do you know
if there will be a reunion show?"
SusanWalters says "Yes I was. And, Connie was
just great1"
HLHost says "And, James Brolin!"
SusanWalters says "That was my first job in
L.A.. God bless Aaron Spelling. I left the show
to do Elvis And Me. I can't imagine a reunion.
I doubt they'd ask me, they'd ask Heidi
Bohay. I was on such a short amount of time.
But, they were nice people to work with."
BillyMilikin asks "This isn't the first time
you worked with Aaron Spelling how did you get
involved with him? What is he like?"
SusanWalters says "No, it is not. (giggle)
Well, the first time I got Hotel was clearly my
audition with everybody else. Then when he
let me out of Hotel to do Elvis and Me they
stipulated that I'd do a pilot the next year
... Nightingales. Then my husband got on
Melrose Place, and I told my agent that I'd
like to audition to get on the show cause he was
now on it. Mr. Spelling has been very good
to my husband and I. What else is nice is that
he hires nice, normal people. No temper tantrums
or premadonnas!"
HLHost says "I'm thinking, she's lying about
that!"
SusanWalters says "I'm not, I did scenes with
Heather and Lissa and in between scenes,
they were NOT looking in the mirror. They
were chatting and such."
HLHost says "Lisa's leaving isn't she?"
SusanWalters says "Yeah she is. It surprised
me but I worked after I had my kids and there
are times I wish I wouldn't have. Maybe she's
seizing the opportunity right now to be with
her kid. She'll have no problem picking up
where she left off, though. And, she'll be a great
mom, too."
HLHost says "yeah."
Carly Toye asks "i susan i loved watching you
on loving as lorna. i also really loved
watching elvis and me. was it fun making that
movie?"
SusanWalters says "(giggle) Yes, it was very
much fun making Elvis and Me. A lot of hard
work, but I enjoy when I'm busy and I have
to stay focused and concentrated and running
back and forth between wardrobe and makeup.
Loving was fun ... playing a bad girl."
HLHost says "Not like you are in real life!"
SusanWalters says "No! My mother used to say
"that looks just like you when you do
that!""
guest33 asks "how do you unwind and relax from
all of your acting?"
SusanWalters says "Here's the secret ...."
HLHost says "Ooooh!"
SusanWalters says "Doing MP WAS my vacation.
I hung out in the trailor with my husband
doing my needlepoint, watching the news and
reading glamour magazines. Then I got to
get dressed, have my makeup on and do scenes
with Rob Estes. Cause my whole life is
my two kids that I have to get up and get
them going with their homework. I jog everyday. I
hang out with the girls. We go to the library
.. I do needlepoint ... I just hang out! I don't
relax very well."
SusanWalters says "(laugh) I'm a little tense
right now with the show about to be on."
HLHost says "Thanks for being on the show!"
SusanWalters says "I really enjoyed it!"
HLHost says "Susan, thank you so much for joining
us tonight, it was great to have you
on our show. And thanks to all you folks for
joining us from excite, and to all of you here
on realhollywood.com. Please join us again
tomorrow night at 7PM when our guest will be
Roy Dupuis from the hit TV series "La Femme
Nikita". Goodnight!"
